Cappawater
The earliest mentioned of the lands of Cappawater was in 1766, advertised in the Dublin Journal on 11 February 1766. 60 acres of “choice arable and meadowing ground” were to be let. This was old Irish plantation measure, and would be 97 acres in today’s money, matching the present day proportions of the entire townland of Cappawater. The local representative was a Mr. John Nowlan of Paulville, near Tullow – not necessarily connected to the Myshall Nolan’s.

The present day Nolan farm at Cappawater was in 1852 being leased by Patrick Fenlon (shown as Finlan in Griffiths Valuation, 1852), and owned by John Thompson. A small plot with another house was subleased to Patrick Bermingham.

In 1885, Margaret Nolan was the tenant, and James Pattison the landlord, as noted in a communication from the Land Commission, reported by the Leinster Leader on 20 June 1885. Margaret was the widow of John Nolan of Ballaghmore, and daughter of Edward Nolan of Kilmaglish. Margaret was again mentioned in 1892, subject to a judgement against her by the landlord Sarah Pattison, widow.
The same property was purchased in 1904 by Margaret Nolan from the estate of John A. Campion.

John & Margaret Nolan
John Nolan (1822-1882) married Margaret Nolan (1835-1917) in Myshall, 7 November 1872. Margaret dau. of Edward Nolan and Hannah Kearney. John son of Mathew Nolan. John died 26 June 1882 at Cappawater.

Did John come from Ballaghmore originally? Marriage record states father is Matthew Nolan of Cappawater. Family history/tree states his father was Michael Nolan of Ballaghmore, m. Fenlon, and had sibling Winifred Nolan x Ed Gorman [doubtful data]

Original family tree. Inconsistent, as suggests that John Nolan was son of Michael Nolan, but should be Matthew? Might be that John is in fact a son of Matthew Nolan & Catherine Curran.

Family of Mathew Nolan and Catherine Curran
For the Ballaghmore and Capawater Nolans, the earliest documented and confirmed ancestor I can find is Mathew Nolan. He was born in 1764 in the Myshall area. He married Catherine Curran, born c. 1778. Together they had at least three children:
1. Winifred was born c. 1820, and married Ed Gorman.
2. Mathew was born c. 1823, and married Anne Clowry.
3. John was born c. 1822 and married another Nolan, Margaret Nolan of Kilmaglush, dau. of Edward Nolan and Hannah Kearney.
Mathew died 14 November 1852, and Catherine died 25 June 1845. They are buried together in the R.C. Graveyard at Myshall, together with their daughter Winny 1.
There are several versions of the Ballaghmore/Capawater Nolan’s family tree that contain some inconsistencies pre-1900, most notably that the father of Winny, Mathew and John was a “Michael” Nolan. Based on civil records (marriage) and the graveyard in Myshall, their father was in fact Mathew Nolan (1764-1852) and their mother Catherine Curran (1778-1845).
Winifred (Winny) Nolan & Ed Gorman
Winifred (Winny) Nolan, b. 1820, dau. of Mathew Nolan and Catherine Curran, married Ed Gorman of Aclare in January 1845. They had at least five children: James (c. 1845-1921), Catherine (b. 1847, died young), Margaret (b. 1849), Michael (b. 1851) and Catherine (1853-1909). Winny died 11 May 1858 at the age of 38, and is buried beside her parents Matthew and Catherine in the R.C. Graveyard at Myshall.
Mathew Nolan & Anne Clowry
Mathew Nolan, b. c. 1823, son of Mathew Nolan and Catherine Curran. Married Anne (Nanny) Clowry on 21 Oct 1873 at Myshall church. Anne dau. of Patrick Clowry. Witnesses were James Hayden and Mary Anne Clowry. Mathew and Anne lived and farmed in Ballaghmore.

John Nolan & Margaret Nolan
John Nolan, b. c. 1822, son of Mathew Nolan and Catherine Curran. He married Margaret Nolan (bapt. 3 Jan 1835), dau. of Edward Nolan and Hannah Kearney of Kilmaglish, at Myshall on 7 November 1872. John died 26 June 1882 at Cappawater from pneumonia, though had been suffering from heart problem for three years. Brother in law Edward Nolan of Kilmaglish was present at his death.
