Pieter Zee was born in Twisk on April 23, 1850. He was the youngest son of Pieter Zee & Neeltje Veer that survived into adulthood. He married Geertje Zijp in May 1875, daughter of Klaas Zijp and Trijntje Spaans. Together they farmed in Twisk. Sons Klaas (1877) and Pieter (1881) were born in Twisk. Geertje died young, at the age of 42 in June 1896. Klaas was 18 and Pieter was 14.

That October, the joint holdings of Pieter and Geertje were divided, as was normal custom. Jan Groot Thomaszn, a farmer in Twisk, was named as an additional guardian of the two teenagers. He was married to Elizabeth Zijp, Trijntje’s sister. Pieter’s brother Andries Zee was made responsible for the valuation of goods. An inventory of property, and contents of the house, yard, sheds, and farmland was then taken. The family home, yard, and orchard, were listed first, with reference Twisk C276 and C277.

Farmland (reference Twisk B55, 173, 176, and 24) totalled 5 hectares, 14 aren, 80 centaren, and a half share in farmland in the Bennemeer, Twisk, 50 aren 14 centaren (Ref B18) [Willem Leeuwrik had the other half].

Contents inventorized included basic household items (chairs, tables, pots, pans, crockery), 2 cows (worth 240 guilders), 4 pigs (f. 60). Seed-room contents f. 300, haystack contents f. 300, potatoes at f. 130. On the farmland, 2 horses (f. 260), 4 sheep (f. 60), peas, white beans, and brown beans (f. 210), eggs (f. 75). Jewelry and cash: Goud hoofdijzer f. 75, 2 bloedkoralen kettings f. 100, gouden horloge met gouden ketting, f. 25. And finally, 30 guilders in bank notes. Total of all contents f. 2536,20.

Pieter had two larger debts: a loan of f. 4400 from the Hervormde Gemeente Abbekerk, at 4% interest p.a., in the form of a mortgage taken out 31 Dec 1892, and a loan from Pieter Donker, f. 800, at 4%. He also owed 20 guilders to the wagon-maker Hoekstra, who lived next door to the old family home of his parents, Pieter Zee and Neeltje Veer.

Valuations were carried out by Andries Zee, Cornelis Zee (both brothers of Pieter), and Gerrit Kz Zijp (a brother of Geertje’s). The house was valued at f. 1400, and the land at f. 5780. The estate was then divided between Pieter and his two children, with Pieter retaining the house.

The home of Pieter Zee and Geertje Zijp is shown on the Kadaster map below, later we will try to find where it is.

In 1899, Pieter Zee moved to Nibbixwoud, where he married his second wife Antje Timmerman, dau. of Pieter Timmerman and Dieuwertje de Graaff. She died in 1909 in Twisk. In 1912, Pieter married for the third time, to Antje Schermer, daughter of Hendrik Schermer and Neeltje Druif. Pieter died Jan 28, 1926, in Wijdenes.

Finding the house
